Purpose of Consciousness as the Mindset Switchboard

New Research Supports the Theory of Mindsets (TOM)  by Ambrosia Lea For decades, scientists and philosophers have tried to answer one of the most ancient questions in human history: Why did consciousness evolve at all? We know what consciousness feels like from the inside—awareness, reflection, choice—but we’ve never been entirely sure why nature bothered to build something so metabolically expensive. Two new studies from researchers at Ruhr University Bochum offer a compelling answer, one that aligns strikingly with the Theory of Mindsets: consciousness may have evolved as the system that triggers and regulates different mindsets, allowing organisms to survive, adapt, and ultimately thrive. In other words, consciousness might exist because mindset‑shifting is essential for life. The ALARM Theory: Consciousness Begins as Survival The first study, led by philosophers Albert Newen and Carlos Montemayor, outlines what they call the ALARM theory —a model describing three levels of co...

The Survival‑Based Mindset (SBM) and the Psychology of Bullying

Through the lens of the Survival‑Based Mindset (SBM) , bullying becomes something far more structural: a predictable outcome of a mindset that has lost access to empathy and relies entirely on threat‑management and control to maintain psychological stability. SBM is not “mean” by nature; it is threat‑anchored . It builds identity from the outside in, scanning constantly for danger, instability, or social unpredictability. When identity depends on threat‑avoidance, difference becomes dangerous, empathy becomes inaccessible, and conformity becomes a survival strategy. Understanding bullying through SBM reveals the architecture beneath the harm — and once we see the architecture, we can begin to dismantle it. 1. SBM at its core: identity built from threat‑avoidance In the Theory of Mindsets, SBM describes a person whose sense of self is co...
